Extraordinary Exploits of Ordinary Individuals Who Got Into the Fight Against Nazi Germany
About this event
Unable to remain indifferent to Nazi horrors, an astonishing mix of individual Americans and Europeans put their lives on the line to fight Hitler and help the Allies any way they could: chanteuse Josephine Baker, ballerina Audrey Hepburn, the Pole who volunteered to go to Auschwitz, the mousy Paris art curator Rose Valland, British stockbroker Nicholas Winton, Brussels teenager Helen Moszkiewiez. They all rose to the occasion motivated by moral outrage, offering inspiration for us today.
Instructor Sandy Garson was a recognized Maine journalist from 1973 to 1983 when she discovered the hidden history of Germans who fought Hitler inside his Reich and began working on that topic. She also kept encountering stories of non-Germans engaged in their own resistance against the Nazis and began collecting their stories too. Many, including those of heroic Americans who jumped into the fight when they didn’t have to, have only become public in the past few years. The courage and defiance of so many Europeans and Americans who found such a wide variety of ways to fight fascism resonate so loudly in our time, she wants their stories to be told as widely as possible.
