The Odyssey has always been celebrated as the ultimate adventure tale: Odysseus’s voyage home after the fall of Troy, his encounters with beautiful goddesses, his defeats of scary monsters and his recapture of his house in a heroic final battle. But this plot summary completely misses the real importance of the text to the Greeks, and is why many centuries later the Veterans Administration uses it as a tool in treating PTSD. The Odysseus who leaves Troy is not the wise warrior who left home to help Menelaus, but a man damaged by violence, not ready to reassume a leadership role in a peaceful kingdom. During the time the stories were handed down, Greek culture had changed; trade — not war — was the way forward. Homer’s The Odyssey chronicles Odysseus’s struggle to regain control of himself in order to govern his kingdom; it is a tale of trial and error before triumph. Text: I will be using the Robert Fitzgerald translation. There are several good modern translations, but please avoid prose summaries.

Instructor Maryanne Ward retired after a 40-year career in small college education. She chaired Kenyon College (Gambier, OH) Humanities program and served as academic dean until moving to Centre College (Danville, KY) as professor of English and chair of the Humanities program. Her area of special interest and scholarship is 19th-century British literature. Among other topics, her publications have examined the relationship between literature, landscape, and painting.
