The New York Times recently called Gabriel Garcia Marquez “the magus of magical realism, a Nobel laureate who blended truth and fiction to fit the outsize reality of Latin American life.” You’ve undoubtedly heard of his magnum opus, One Hundred Years of Solitude. It often appears on lists of the best of world literature. But it is also more than 400 pages long! Come along for an alternative way to get to know the power of Marquez’s storytelling. Get a taste of Marquez’s magical style through his novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Then, experience his literary range by reading The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor, which dates to an earlier phase, when Marquez was working as a journalist for El Espectador. Both stories testify to Marquez’s skill as a writer, and both are delightfully manageable in length.

Instructor Michelle Miller is a retired high-school English teacher, who has taught American, British, and World Literature for over 20 years. While she may have left her independent school classrooms behind, she still relishes the give-and-take of discussing good books, which is what motivated her decision to join the CSC faculty. After several years of summering in Owls Head, Maine, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Michelle and her spouse Russ Krauss relocated permanently in May 2020 and have discovered the joys of residing in the Pine Tree State.
